Quote of the Day, “Stay out of bad activities, you could get into a huge amount of trouble.”

When I heard the shot I came a running to Mr. Nathan Radley’s house. Once I got there I found a huddle of people around his from gate. I soon found out that Nathan said he saw black man in his back yard and almost had him. I heard the voice of Miss Stephanie talking about Mr. Nathan and then suddenly to Jem. I turned around to face him and before I could asked were he has been I found him without him pants in front of the whole neighborhood. Boy, did I ever feel surprised and embarrassed. I asked, “Where’re pants son?”

        He answered with, “Pants, sir?”

I asked him again, “Pants.” At that time I saw Dills face turn white. I asked him what was the matter and he said that he won them in a game of strip poker over at the fishpool. “Strip poker?” went my mind. Before I could asked them what that was, exactly, Mrs. Rachel stomped and buffeted like a bull right towards Dill. I stepped in just in time before she could strangle him. I told her to wait a second and then asked the kids if they were playing cards.

The reply came with, “Matches, too.

I told them to straiten up and for Jem to get his pants from Dills. They all went to Dill’s faster than a tornado. I had to talk to Rachel and assure her that it was something that would come and go. She was mad, but calmed herself down. The crowd slipped away after some time and the children came home. Jem had his pants on and I sent them to bed with a grim face. They weren’t playing strip poker that night. I had the feeling that they were at the Radleys, but I choose not to tell them. They seemed like they had enough of the event. God, how will I ever raise those two on my own.
